OAS and Suriname Sign Agreement for Mission to Observe Elections of May 25

The Organization of American States (OAS) will send an Electoral Observation Mission to the general elections in Suriname that will take place on May 25, according to the agreement signed today between the hemispheric institution and the government of the South American country. The Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, recalled that the election will take place on his last day at the head of the Organization. “Therefore you will have one Secretary General the day of the elections, and probably a statement by a different Secretary General the next day. And I´m very proud of that, I think it’s a sign of the continuity of the Organization, which is something of great importance to us and we are grateful to Suriname for this occasion to show that this Organization never stops working even if it’s changing its Secretary General from one day to the next.”
