CARICOM and Japan further strengthens relationship

CARICOM and Japan relationship will go a step further this week, when CARICOM Foreign Ministers meet with their Japanese counterpart, the Honorable Fumio Kishida, at the Fourth CARICOM-Japan Ministerial Meeting, on 15 November 2014, in Tokyo, Japan. The CARICOM side will be led by the Honorable Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guyana and Chairperson of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR).

The Caribbean Community and Japan have enjoyed long-standing relations, established since 1993. Currently they are celebrating the occasion of the Japan-CARICOM Friendship Year in 2014, marking the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of formal relations. Both sides are committed to continuously strengthening the relationship; and earlier this year, the Japanese Prime Minister, Mr. Shinz┼Ź Abe, visited the Region. This visit was highly significant, as it was the first time that a Japanese Prime Minister had visited the CARICOM Region.
